On May 9, Torch Technologies received honors as one of the "Best Places to Work" in the large business category at the fifth annual Best Places to Work awards luncheon.
The Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County and the North Alabama Society for Human Resource Management co-hosted the program, which took place at the Von Braun Center North Hall. More than 200 companies received nominations, and 20 received awards as the "Best Places to Work."
"These companies have good reason to be proud," said Chamber Board Chair Jim Bolte, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama.
This year marked the debut of a "micro" category to join the small, medium and large businesses. The choice to introduce the new category was based on the increasing number of smaller companies in Huntsville as compared with the other sizes, said Danny Windham, the chamber’s vice chair for work force.
The micro category includes businesses with 25-35 employees, while the category for small businesses requires 36-70 workers. The medium category comprises businesses with 71-200 employees, and the large business category is reserved for companies with 200 or more employees. Judges selected winners for each category based solely on surveys completed by employees of each nominated business.
The "Best Places to Work" award winners were as follows. In the micro category, QuantiTech, QTEC, Edward Jones, Nesin Therapy Services and Pinnacle Solutions received accolades. In the small category, Willbrook Solutions, Brockwell Technologies, Venturi, Manufacturing Technical Solutions, and Maynard Cooper & Gale won awards. Winners in the medium category comprised PeopleTec, Modern Technology Solutions (MTSI), Integration Innovation Incorporated (i3), Avion Solutions and AEgis Technologies. Finally, the large category included Intuitive Research and Technology, URS, Torch Technologies, Camber and Dynetics.
Quantum Workplace, a national company specializing in measuring workplace satisfaction, measured and selected companies based on the following criteria: team effectiveness, retention probability, alignment with goals, trust in co-workers, individual contribution, manager effectiveness, trust in senior leaders, feelings of value to the company, work engagement and people practices. Quantum then surveyed employees.
"Despite facing numerous challenges locally while dealing with a still-recovering economy," Windham said, "our business community still continued to be recognized as one of the nation’s leading places to launch, sustain and grow a business."
